A prefabricated steel-frame warehouse for iron ore has been fitted with a new-energy photovoltaic power generation system.

As the global mining and bulk cargo logistics industries accelerate their transition toward green, low-carbon operations, the construction of new iron ore or coal storage yards—or the retrofitting of existing ones with enclosures—is no longer merely about “dust suppression and wind protection”; it has become a crucial step for companies on their path to becoming green, zero-carbon enterprises. When large-span prefabricated steel-structured iron ore warehouses are equipped with “new energy photovoltaic systems” (BIPV/rooftop PV systems), these massive industrial storage facilities are instantly transformed into highly efficient “green micro-power plants.”
This innovative architectural model—capable of “generating electricity above and storing ore below”—achieves a perfect integration of environmental protection, storage and transportation, and clean energy benefits, opening up a entirely new path for mining companies and port operators to reduce costs and improve efficiency:

  1. Energy Independence
Iron ore warehouses typically feature unobstructed, large-span roofs covering tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands of square meters. After installing photovoltaic modules, the installed capacity can reach several megawatts (MW), resulting in a substantial annual electricity generation.
The clean electricity generated by the photovoltaic system can be directly and prioritized for use by conveyor belts, stacker-reclaimers, dust suppression spray systems, and lighting systems both inside and around the warehouse, significantly reducing electricity costs during peak periods; surplus electricity can also be fed into the grid for sale, generating a long-term, stable cash flow.
  1. Structural Safety
Installing photovoltaic modules on the roof of an iron ore warehouse places greater demands on the load-bearing capacity of the main steel structure and its wind load requirements. Using professional modeling software, we conduct precise calculations of the dead loads and live loads imposed by the photovoltaic modules, mounting rails, wind cables, and maintenance walkways to ensure that steel columns, long-span space frames, or portal frames remain rock-solid even under extreme weather conditions.
To address the strong wind conditions typical of mining areas and coastal ports, we specifically optimized the fasteners for the colored steel roof panels and the mounting nodes of the PV racks, enabling the system to easily withstand typhoons of Force 12 or higher and high-intensity snow loads.
  1. Structural Service Life
Iron ore fines have a slightly acidic or alkaline nature, and coastal ports are characterized by high salt fog exposure. The structural components are treated with hot-dip galvanizing (ASTM A123 / ISO 1461) and a duplex anti-corrosion coating to prevent structural corrosion.
Highly corrosion-resistant aluminum-zinc or zinc-aluminum-magnesium sheets are selected for the roof panels and photovoltaic mounting components. Combined with a waterproof, leak-proof, and corrosion-resistant joint design, this ensures that the rooftop power generation system has the same service life as the steel structure (25–30 years or more).
  1. ESG Standards
Completely resolves the issues of dust and rainwater runoff pollution associated with traditional open-pit iron ore stockpiles, meeting strict environmental protection and ESG assessment criteria.
More than 70% of the steel structural components are precision-cut using CNC laser technology and prefabricated in the factory; on-site assembly is performed entirely with bolts, while photovoltaic mounting structures are installed simultaneously. This significantly shortens the overall construction schedule and helps the project come online quickly.
