In our factory’s steel structure fabrication system, cutting accuracy serves as the “first line of defense” in determining the overall quality and construction efficiency of a project. Traditional flame cutting or plasma cutting often suffers from issues such as large heat-affected zones, severe slag buildup on cut edges, high material waste, long cutting times, extensive secondary grinding labor, and cumulative dimensional deviations.
With the widespread adoption of CNC laser cutting technology in the steel structure sector, high-precision, high-efficiency, and low-waste digital cutting has become key to enhancing the core competitiveness of prefabricated steel structures. Over the past five years, our fabrication plant has added two raw material laser cutters and one profile laser cutter.
From the processing of steel plates, structural section joint plates, and connection plates to the creation of complex through-holes, as well as the cutting of notches in structural sections and welding holes, laser cutting technology—with its millimeter-level precision—lays a solid foundation for subsequent assembly, welding, and on-site hoisting operations.
- Reduce cumulative errors during assembly or fitting
Laser cutting features a small focal spot and an extremely narrow kerf (typically between 0.2 mm and 0.5 mm), resulting in a vertical, smooth cut without slag. This allows components to proceed directly to the next welding or assembly process without the need for manual secondary grinding.
Whether for high-strength bolt holes or complex-shaped joint plates, laser cutting achieves positioning accuracy of ±0.1 mm. This ensures a 100% high-strength bolt penetration rate upon arrival at the construction site, completely eliminating structural safety hazards caused by on-site hole enlargement or forced drilling.
- Significantly Improved Efficiency
By integrating Tekla and CAD models, laser cutting software enables fully automated optimization of nesting layouts, increasing steel plate material utilization to over 90% and significantly reducing material waste and costs.
High-power fiber laser cutting machines far exceed the cutting speeds of traditional processes for standard medium- and thick-gauge plates (3–40 mm) and support 24-hour automated continuous operation, greatly shortening component production cycles and ensuring on-time project delivery.
- Small Heat-Affected Zone (HAZ)
Compared to the extensive heat radiation of traditional flame cutting, laser cutting delivers highly concentrated heat input, resulting in an extremely small heat-affected zone (HAZ) that causes virtually no deformation or annealing softening in thin or medium-thickness plates.
The metallographic structure of the edges remains stable, without altering the chemical or mechanical properties of the steel edges, providing ideal groove and edge conditions for subsequent automated welding in accordance with AWS D1.1 or ISO 3834 standards.
- Integrated Processing Capabilities for H-Sections and Tubes
Laser cutting machines can directly read 3D detailed design drawings, easily cutting complex, irregular structures such as corbels, joint plates, curved components, and intersecting line holes.
For the processing of intersecting lines and holes in round, square, and rectangular tubes, 3D laser cutting machines can complete cutting, beveling, and hole drilling in a single operation, significantly improving the machining accuracy of tubular truss structures.
