The cleaned steel is submerged into a bath of molten zinc at approximately $450^\circ\text{C}$ ($842^\circ\text{F}$). A metallurgical reaction occurs, forming a series of zinc-iron alloy layers topped by a pure zinc coating. This bond is molecular, making it far more durable than paint or powder coating.
3. Cooling and Passivation
After withdrawal from the zinc bath, the components are cooled and then treated with a passivation solution. This adds a chemical layer that prevents “white rust” and enhances the structure’s chemical resistance against harsh sea breezes.
